With Newsvine's redesign it is now possible customize your user experience. Like many of you I have been tweaking my front page time and time against in the past two days. Now, I believe I have my front page looking great. I managed to fuse design and functionality to create the ultimate newsvine front page. After this brief tour I hope that you will let me know how you modified your own home page. Perhaps by the end ideas will be flowing full stream and everyone wins. So lets begin
The Basic Modules
Besides the AP wire on everything on the front page (aka, second & third column) is customizable. So the following is a list of basic topical modules I keep on my front page in this order:
- U.S. News
- world news
During the unveiling of the new front page Newsvine also brought forth some new features. Those, as well as some of the old ones, are as followed:
- Associated Press top story (standard)
- Most active stories
- Top seeds
- Newsvine Columnists
The Side Bar
I really love the new side bar feature. It allows me to stash away some of Newsvine's new features for a quick glance when I am bored or whatever. Those features are as followed:
- News in Pictures (love this one)
- Newsvis (to make sure I'm doing my part)
- Groups Spotlight (so I don't miss out on anything)
As you have probably figured out I pretty much customized my new front page to look like the old front page. However, I cut out a couple of topical modules and the "most comments" section because I don't really like those.
Also, I don't have Newsvine Live anywhere on my front page because I think it is busy and gives me a headache. If you have figured out how to cope with this feature please (PLEASE!) let me know. The idea is great, but I just can't handle so much at one time.
Finally, I really want to have some feedback here. What are you doing with your front page? Post a comment (it looks better on your Newsvis!) and let myself and others know how you customized. Happy designing!
