Its Christmas and I have been browsing through tons (TONS!) of buyers guides and gift guides in search of that perfect something for my friends and family. what I learned from my quest into the realm of consumerism is that there is a lot of the same stuff out there that is being pushed at me as gift ideas. From MP3 players to $700 watches it seems as if everywhere I go the same things keep popping up and although there is a lot of really great stuff out there none of it truly has peeked my interest.
So for the benefit of myself and everyone like me I have assembled 5 hipster gift ideas which will make any stuffed stocking burst from the seems.
Give the gift of information
Membership to Daring Fireball
This gift idea came to me while thinking of a great holiday gift for my best friend who shares many similar interests with me. While thinking back on past gifts I remember that back at the beginning of the semester I accidentally purchased two memberships to John Gruber's Daring Fireball blog.
Seeking information I found that a membership includes one year full RSS access to the site's esteemed "Linked List" and full posts. Well I really had no need for two so I shot an e-mail out to Gruber asking if I could move one membership to my buddy. Gruber was happy to oblige and I was pumped to introduce my friend to this great site, and give one of the most important gifts of all--the gift of information.
To this day my friend enjoys his membership and has become a rabid fan of the site. This was one of the bests gifts I have ever given. Membership is a mere $19.00 and you can learn all about it by clicking here.
Additionally, if you want to go the extra mile you can pay $29 and buy a Daring Fireball T-Shirt. The best part about this is that each T-shirt comes with a membership subscription which is a great deal.
Give a practical gift
I'll be honest with you, I am a total Mac App-oholic. I am constantly in pursuit of finding the next great mac app. My search has lead me to countless programs, some good some bad. However, there are a few apps out there that are just amazing and every mac user should own them. This year when friends and family have asked me what I would like for them to get me this Christmas I rattle off a list of stunning mac apps that I would love to add to my collection.
Giving a practical gift such as a Mac application is really the best way to go during the holidays. People always have trouble buying practical gifts because they feel as if the gifts are not "from the heart." Well what I tell those people is, the quickest to a hipster geek's heart is through his/her computer.
There are several amazing applications out there but when it comes to gift giving you want to give the best. Below I have assembled a list of the best apps for your cherished Apple fanboy.
In no particular order, please click to the links to find out more:
- Coda (coding)
- NewNewsWire or NewsFire or Endo (RSS)
- Delicious Library (movies and more)
- Cha-Ching (money management)
- Ecto or MarsEdit (blogging clients)
- Candybar (beautification)
- ...or if its true love Adobe Creative Suite 3 (desktop publishing, graphic design, and photo editing)
There are also some great bundles out there, but it's Christmas so help out those struggling indie developers and buy a regularly priced license.
Give the gift of service
Soon Christmas will have come and passed and the new year will lead many to make resolutions for the months to come. Bloggers are particularly aggressive in assembling new goals for their writing in the next year. Perhaps you know someone who has resolved to start a blog, or perhaps someone who is already blogging but wants to step up his/her game.
Well, for those people I would recommend the Media Temple (mt) gift card. This card ensures one year of free hosting by one of the most established hosts in the blogging community.
When I go to blogs hosted by Media Temples its like a bloggers secret handshake. When I see that (mt) symbol which these bloggers brandish proudly on their sites I known almost assuredly that these bloggers are serious about their work.
Media Temple hosts some of the most well known blogs on the market today, and everyone who uses this host has nothing but praise to give them. I read post after post about how amazing Media Temple is and with a price tag of $95 for (gs) Grid-Service Lite it's clear that these hosts are serious about their product as well.
Give the gift of style
I mentioned Daring Fireball's t-shirt earlier as a great addition to the membership, well John Gruber isn't the only one with great apparel, Steve Smith at Ordered List has a shirt you should be interested in as well.
There is nothing really special about this shirt, but fans of Ordered List and hipster geeks alike will appreciate its design. For a mere $16 this shirt is a great deal and allows your hipster geek to represent in style.
Another great shirt you might check out is Darren Rowse's Problogger T-shirt (mens and womens styles). Nothing says "I love You" like a t-shirt from his or her favorite website. So if the ones I have mentioned don't fit the bill then check around to see if any of your hipster geek's other favorite sites have apparel as well.
When in doubt, give them p0rn
No not that kind of p0rn, that's just wrong. What I am talking about is productivity p0rn. You may have never heard of this term but you certainly know what it means. Ever see those neat little organizational aides on the desks of friends? Well that productivity p0rn. Basically its anything thats function is organization but is so stylish that most just buy it because it looks great.
Productivity p0rn goes a long way with hipster geeks, especially if they are also in the GTD cult. Additionally, the amount of productivity p0rn out there is staggering and can be found almost any where.
For your convenience I have waded through the barrage of productivity p0rn and found what I believe to be the best of the batch. So take a look at the following links for the best stuff out there.
In no particular order:
- Moleskine Planner
- Fountian Pen
- Office Organizers
- Digital Whitebaords
- DIY Planner
- Index Cards (no link, they can be found easily, if you are confused about why they are included click here)
This concludes the gift guide, but the discussion can rage on. If you know of any great hipster gift ideas please feel free to comment. I am eager to read your opinions.
